ENGLISH VERSION

Dankaur is a small town in Uttar Pardesh, just outside of Delhi, that hosts an annual week long mela. Hoards of people come to enjoy the festivities, shop, eat sweets and the kids love the fun fair rides. The centerpiece of the festival is a three day traditional wrestling tournament.

I went on the final day with my friend Rajinder Pahlwan, son of late Shree Shyamlal Pahlwan, whose son, Jitu Pahlwan was competing. Jitu had taken a long break from wrestling due to an injury, but now he is making a triumphant comeback. His match on this day was against a local wrestler named Vinod Pahlwan. The two wrestlers were equally skilled and the bout was declared a draw.

So many wrestlers had turned out to compete that the final day’s competition was limited to wrestlers who hadn’t yet had a match. It was a great competition. The dangal committee did an excellent job organizing everything and the police made sure that the crowd was peaceful.

In one of the main matches, Sintu Gujjar Pahwlan pinned a might wrestler from the armed forces and the crowd went wild celebrating his victory.

The first-prize bout for 21000/- was between Rajesh Bhati and a local wrestler. The bout went on for a very long time and finally the referee stopped it and declared the match at draw.
