Sports Ministry Sanctions Rs 2 Lakhs for Former Wrestler


NEW DELHI: Sports minister MS Gill on Thursday sanctioned an aid of Rs 2 lakhs for former wrestler Hiralal Shaw from the National Welfare Fund for financially distressed athletes.

"Dr MS Gill, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, has sanctioned ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2 lakh from National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons to Shri Hiralal Shaw, a former Wrestling player who is living in indigent conditions," the sports ministry said in a statement.

Shaw competed at both the national and international level in 1954.

"Taking into consideration his financial position, the sports minister has sanctioned ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to Shri Shaw."

Under the Scheme of National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons, the sports ministry provides lump sum financial assistance to outstanding sportspersons of the past, who are facing financial distress.
