WRESTLER BENIA WINS PANTHAL KESARI TITLE

JAMMU: Wrestler Benia of Jammu and Kashmir Police lifted the 112th edition of the Panthal Kesari Dangal title after he downed Amit Kumar of Guru Hanuman Akhara Delhi in six minutes in the main bout that was played at Panthal in district Reasi.
Benia was presented Rs 8,000 cash reward and traditional `Silver Gurj and Patta’ by eminent writer, Prof Shiv Nirmohi and President J and K Indian Style Wrestling Association, Shiv Kumar Sharma. Runners-up, Amit got Rs 7,000 as cash prize.
This Dangal is organised every year on Makar Sankranti by the Association by inviting wrestlers from Northern Indian states.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Katra, Pushker Nath Tikoo, SHO Katra Pardeep Kumar Gupta, retired SP, Prithvi Raj Sharma retired Tehsildar, Bansi Lal Tidyal were guests of honour.
Sarpanch Sham Singh, Bansi Lal, Rajinder Kumar, Suresh Kumar and Jagdish Sharma were also present. They all were honoured by the Shri Swami Nitya Nand Dangal Committee Panthal.
In this day-long event, about 57 bouts took place. In the second main bout Sagar of Delhi defeated Bhurra of Pathankot to get a cash prize of Rs 6,000. Runners-up, Bhurra received Rs 5,000.
The third main bout was won by Goga of Amritsar beating Qasim Din (Billu) of J and K Police while fourth bout went to Sukhchinder of Amritsar, who beat Surinder of Delhi.
Other Bouts: Kala of Assar beat Anuj of Delhi; Jagroop of Delhi beat Kaka; Gulshan of JKP beat Bhalla of Amritsar, Kaka of Pathankot beat Johny of Amirtsar; Babbi of Pathankot beat Jagroop Ali of Dena Nagar; Mukha beat Guchanran; Inderjeet of Delhi beat Sukha of Amritsar; Kuldeep Singh of Bhumag beat Bodh Raj of Dena Nagar and Billu (Jakker) of Jindrah beat Hussain of Reasi.
Meanwhile, President of the Association, Shiv Kumar Sharma thanked those individuals and departments who extended a helping hand in making the event a success.


Benia wins 112th Panthal Kesari Dangal

Wrestler Benia of the state police and a resident of Basantgarh in Udhampur district lifted the 112th annual Panthal Kesari Dangal title outplaying Amit of Delhi, in a closely fought contest that lasted for 15 minutes at Panthal in Reasi district today.

Benia was adjudged the best wrestler in the vishal dangal organised by the Shri Swami Nitya Nand Wrestling Association, Panthal, in collaboration with the J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association.

The winner of the first bout, Benia, was given a cash prize of Rs 11,000, in addition to traditional silver gurj and patta by chief guest and president of the J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association Shiv Kumar Sharma.

Runners-up Mool Chand got a cash prize of Rs 5,000. Prof Shiv Nirmohi was the guest of honour on the occasion.

Panthal Kesari Dangal is being organised regularly for the last 112 years on Makar Sakranti with the active cooperation of locals from Panthal, Katra, Udhampur, Jammu, Manoon, Bhagata, Kunya, Chak-Bhagta and other areas.

In all, 54 bouts were played in the day-long dangal. In the second main bout, wrestler Sagar of Delhi beat Pura of Pathankot (Punjab). They won cash prizes of Rs 6,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively. The third bout was played between Goga and Billa, which was won by Goga.
