ENGLISH VERSION
The 30th Hari Singh Pahalwan Memory Dangal at Ghitorni Village was organized with much fanfare. Gurus, wrestlers and coaches from many famous akharas came to participate in the wrestling competitions.
Late Shri Hari Singh was a great wrestler who trained at Guru Jasram Akhara and once wrestled Mahabali Satpal to a draw at Ghitorni. He was also a very good friend of Shyam lal Pahwlan of the same village. Ghitorni Village has a long tradition of producing very good wrestlers. Jeet Pahalwan and Gullu Pahalwan are also from the village. While Jeetu is recuperating from an injury, Gullu won a great victory in today’s dangal.
My friend Vijay Veer Pawar (I call him Vijay Gujjar) whose family has been organizing the dangal for the past 30 years invited me to cover this competition and I am thankful for his hospitality. Vijay supervised all the preparations, like getting the wrestling pit ready and sorting out the tents, chairs, and audio system. He also organized the referees and took care of the security arrangements. The dedication of people like Vijay and his family is one of the main things that has helped keep Indian wrestling alive for all these years. And they are the reason why it still flourishes.
Wrestlers from the following akharas participated in the dangal:
Guru Jasram, Guru Rajkumar Goswami, Guru Kulhipuriya Prakash Pahalwan, Guru Hotel lal Bhati, Prasadi Pahalwan, Hansraj Pahalwan, Vijender, Rajinder Pahalwan, Siri Pahalwan, Guru Hanuman, Guru Capt. Chand Roop, Badri, Guru Shyam Lal, Guru Jasram, Fateh Pur Village, Aya Nagar, Rajukumar Goswami, Kidwai Nagar, Sohna Inder, Nathupar and many others.
The dangal was started with a pooja to sanctify the grounds and then the children’s competitions. Indian wrestling has been making a comeback recently and more and more young people are joining in, so the competition is getting tougher and tougher.
There were so many senior wrestlers that it was hard to see how they could all have a chance to wrestle.
Situ Pahlwan from Guru Rajkumar Goswami Akhara scored a quick pin, lifting his opponent up and delivering him to the ground for the win.
Gullu Pahalwan totally dominated his opponent, using the Irani technique to pin him.
The first prize match was between Jagbeer from Guru Jasram Akhara and a wrestler named Jaswant. It was getting dark when the match got started. Jagbeer managed to pin Jaswant early on, but the referee said they were out of bounds, so he called them back to the center of the pit to start again. The two wrestled until they were both exhausted and finally the bout was declared a draw.
