Chowadi Annual Dangal

JAMMU, Nov 25: Annual wrestling competition was held here today at Chowadi amid great fanfare and grandeur. The event was coordinated by Chowadi Dangal Committee.
Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand was chief guest on the occasion.
Lauding efforts of the organizing committee Tara Chand said that rural sports need to be promoted at all levels and due care has to be given to wrestling which is an integral part of rural sports. He said all over the state wrestling events are held which vouch for popularity of the sports in rural areas.
He said Dangal local name for wrestling was learned in age old Guru-Sishya Parampara, which is inherent part of our tradition system of learning, adding that need of the hour is to respect our traditions and promote those events which represent our culture and traditions.
Wrestlers from eight states participated and a total of sixty bouts were held in the competition. Prize money worth Rupees five lacs was distributed among the participating sportsmen. One physically challenged wrestler also competed and won.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that such rural sports goes a long way in giving opportunity to the rural youngsters for show casing their hidden talent and gives a wider platform to talent.
“Kabaddi and Wrestling are traditional sports of this subcontinent and our sportsmen have proved their mettle at national and international events in these,” he added.
General Secretary, All India Wrestling Federation Dy SP Dushyant Sharma along with other prominent sports personalities attended the function.
Wrestler from Maler Kotla, Punjab. Hamid won the bout and took home a cash prize of Rs. 21,000. In another bout J&K Police wrestler Benia won a cash prize of Rs. 20,000.
