Kalmadi Condoles Death of Chandgi Ram

PTI
Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kamladi has condoled the death of 1970 Asian Games wrestling champion 'Master' Chandgi Ram, who passed away on Tuesday morning following a cardiac arrest.
"The world of wrestling and, in fact, Indian sport will be poorer by Master Chandgi Ram's absence," Kalmadi said in his condolence message.
"The remarkable thing about Master Chandgi Ram is that he continued to contribute to wrestling way beyond his active career. He encouraged women to take to the sport and set up an akhara in Delhi so that girls could play the sport, driving them to follow their dreams and carve a niche for themselves," Kalmadi said.
Ram, a recipient of the prestigious Arjuna and Padma Shri awards, served as Additional Director of Sports in Haryana and was conferred with the titles of 'Hind Kesari', 'Bharat Kesari', 'Bharat Bhim', 'Rustom-e-Hind' and 'Maha Bharat Kesari'.
The most impressive feat of Ram's international career was the gold in 100 kg category in the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok, where he defeated world champion Amvani Abuifazi of Iran en route the title.
He also represented India in the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
"For a man of his achievements, including the titles of Bharat Kesri and Rustom-E-Hind, Master Chandgi Ram has a genial presence. His stint in the Jat Regiment of the Indian Army and then as a school teacher, coupled with his sense of humour made him a towering figure in Indian wrestling history," the IOA chief said.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda also expressed deep sorrow and grief over Ram's demise.
In his condolence message, Hooda said Chandgi Ram was a great wrestler who always kept the Indian tri-colour flying high at international championships.
He said Ram would be long remembered for his contribution to Indian wrestling.

Wrestlers mourn Guruji’s sudden demise

The death of ‘Master’ Chandgi Ram has elicited shock and sorrow from across the wrestling fraternity.
At a promotional campaign on Tuesday, Olympic bronze medallist Sushil Kumar expressed regret at his death. “Guruji was like a pillar for the wrestling world. Despite his seniority, he would always take time out to help youngsters,” he said.
Sushil recollected one of his interaction with the wrestling legend.
“I was supposed to be a top prospect at the 2004 Athens olympics, but performed poorly and lost in the first round there. When I returned, I was dejected, but Guruji told me not to worry. He said he knew I had competed with leg injury and told me that he still believed in me. He said if I continued to practice, I would definitely win a medal,” adding he was en route to the funeral before arriving at the function here, and would head straight to the cremation.
The other wrestler at the event, 2009 World Championship bronze medallist Ramesh Kumar, was shocked at the news, saying he knew about it only from the assembled media. Even though he had not been coached by the legend, Ramesh Kumar said Chandgi Ram was a legend and the loss to wrestling was great.
“Like any other wrestler, I have been in awe of Guruji since childhood. Every one aspired to be like him. In any tournament, if any one performed exceptionally well, we would jokingly ask him if he was trying to become another Chandgi Ram, such was his stature,” he said.

WRESTLING ITS WAY THROUGH

The Hindu FAISAL MOHD NAIM

Kushti, the traditional Indian sport, is fast losing ground
The mud floored dungal (ring) lies empty, gada (traditional dumbbells) kept aside disengaged, a wrestler or two sleeping in shoddy straw huts. This is the general spectacle at the once famous wrestling arena ‘Akhara Sheikhon-Wala', located in the cramped nostalgic bylanes of Ballimaran.
Master Kishan Chand, the coach at the arena, laments, “There is nothing left of it (wrestling) now. It is a materialistic world today… life is in the fast lane, and everyone is running after money. It was in the bygone days that the sport had its glory when famed wrestlers like Gholu Pehelwan from Pakistan and Siddique Pehelwan, among many others, used to lock arms with each other here”. The situation is grim likewise with all the other wrestling arenas or akharas, as aficionados of the sport would call it, in Delhi.
Wrestling, the very popular sport of yesteryears, is fast losing acceptance and finds no place in the hearts of Delhiites anymore. With packed schedules and hectic lifestyles, wrestling doesn't seem to fit anywhere in the current scheme of things. Says Master Chandgi Ram, who won the gold medal at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok, “Today, the world belongs to the rich and not the passionate. Wrestling is a sport for the passionate.”
The sport today is dominated by youths mainly from far flung towns like Hissar, Rohtak, Shamli, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar, who join it not for the love of the sport, but to secure government jobs by performing well in wrestling. Says Satpal, an aspiring wrestler, “Conditions are worse in villages. There are no jobs or any other suitable modes of income. My educational qualifications won't lend me a job in cities… so I hope to do a Sushil Kumar, the famous bronze medal winning wrestler at Beijing Olympics, who secured a government job at the Indian Railways for his feat.”
Lack of funds
The lack of funds haunts wrestling, a game which demands a strict diet and fitness regime. As Chandgi Ram, who now runs his own akhara, puts it, “On an average, it takes Rs.1,000 per day to provide only the essential elements of the diet (milk and almonds) to 10 wrestlers. Also, we have got to pay a wage, although meagre, to the wrestlers so that they can make ends meet.” Insufficient funds and absence of proper infrastructure has led the wrestlers into all sorts of murky businesses. With their strong builds, they are used to influence parties in and out of agreements for money as very vividly portrayed in the famous Bollywood movie Khosla Ka Ghosla. Kishan Pehelwan, the dreaded gangster, accused of multiple crimes, belonged to the Chandgi Ram ka Akhara. Jameel Khan, a professional wrestler, who doesn't find wrestling his true calling anymore, says, “There is a huge scarcity of funds, plus the need for strict and expensive diet… how is one going to manage? The bad habits of drinking and smoking add to the woes. Certainly one could try to cash in on his strong built physique in the worst of times.”
With the situation deteriorating in most of the wrestling arenas, some are thinking of giving up their passion. Those who don't, like the Akhara Sheikhon-wala, the government plans to acquire their land for more profitable projects like schools. Sighs Master Kishan Chand, “All that is left (of wrestling) would be gone too”.
