ENGLISH VERSION
Madan Pur Khadar is a village of in Delhi near the border with Uttar Pradesh, and it is home to some great wrestlers. Krishan Pahlwan, Vikram Pahlwan, Sonu Pahlwan, Naresh Pahlwan, and Ashok Pahlwan all call this village home and they want to make sure it remains a hotbed of wrestling talent. These five pahalwans recently organized a very good local wrestling competition to promote awareness of the sport. Vikram Pahlwan says it’s important to get kids involved to keep the tradition alive.

Khalifa Noor Mohammad of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, told me that all the great wrestlers of India got their start in traditional Indian wrestling. The Great Gama, Bheem Pahlwan, Master Chandagi Ram ji are the legends of traditional wrestling, but even today’s wrestling stars like Sushil Kumar, Rajeev Tomar, or Parvinder Doomchedi got their start at akharas and learned to wrestle in the soil, not on the mat. He said that without traditional wrestling, the sport couldn’t survive in India. He said that dangals are vital because they motivate people to join wrestling. And he also told me that had there been anyone like me in past to write about and promote the sport, Indian wrestling would be in a better position today. I thanked him for his comments.

The dangal started with a pooja, and sanctifying the wrestling area. Then the kid wrestlers started off, then junior and senior categories. Most of the wins were from the pupils of Guru Jasram. Other champions included a wrestler of Khalifa Hote lal, and a wrestler named Sona of Raju Rana Akhara. Many wrestlers came from Samandar Akhara.

The first prize match of rs. one lakh was won by Krishan Pahalwan. Rajesh Bhati, who is a very good wrestler, could not find a suitable challenger so he didn’t wrestle.

The dangal ended late in the night; the organizers invited me to the Naresh Properties office where refreshments were served. I thanked Krishan Pahalwan for being so kind, and called it a night.
