Punjab Wrestler Gurvinder Wins Mageni Kesari Dangal

JAMMU: Wrestler Gurvinder of Garh Shanker in Punjab lifted yet another title winning the 37th Annual Mageni Kesari dangal outplaying Sainf Ali of Mallerkotla in Punjab in the main bout that took place at village Mageni near Chopra Shop in district Udhampur.

Winner Gurvinder bagged cash prize of Rs 5,500 while runner up, Sainf Ali received Rs 3,500 as cash prize. In all, 41 bouts played in the one day-long dangal which was organised by Mageni Dangal Committee in association with J and K Indian style Wrestling Association.

President J and K Indian Style Wrestling Association, Shiv Kumar Sharma was chief guest on the occasion who gave away cash prizes to the winners and runner up wrestlers. Station House Officer, Rambal, R. K Sharma, Principal Joginder Sharma and ex Sarpanch Ram Lal were guests of honour.

Prominent among others present were Amar Singh, Roshan Singh and Virinder Kumar. In the second main bout Puran Singh of Garh Shanker in Punjab defeated wrestler Babber of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh to receive a cash prize of Rs 3,000.

Third main bout between wrestler Bablu of Meerut and Kulbir Singh of Kotbhalwal in Jammu ended in a draw. Both the wrestlers were given away Rs 2000 each. In the fourth main bout, Lalli of Garh Shanker emerged winner outplaying wrestler Swarn Singh of Kot Bhalwal.

Members of organising committee and those technical officials who helped in smooth conduct of dangal were Miru (president), Subhash Chander, Ram Lal, Amar Singh, Dev Raj, Vinod Lamberdar Capt. Lehar Singh (Retd),Vijay Singh (Biju), Mohammad Fareed, Lakshman Singh and Sandokh Chand Patwari.

Bouts played between Babbu of Jindrah and Billu of Kot Bhalwal, Vijay of Bain Bajalta and Mustaq Mohammad of Bamhag Sonu of Garh Shanker and Ajay of Ladon Power House in Udhampur, Thirthu of Manwal and PawanKumar of J&K Police, Gurpal of Amritsar and Bobari of Shiv Mandir Akhara Jammu and Butta of Garh Shanker and Murad Ali of Jammu ended in a draw.

Wrestler Gurvinder Wins Londna Kesari Dangal

JAMMU: Gurvinder of Punjab clinched the 66th Londna Kesari dangal title outplaying Amarjeet Khanna of Punjab in the main bout played at Baba Londna Dev Sthan, six kilometers from Udhampur town.

Winner, Gurvinder was given away a cash prize of Rs 4, 000 while runners-up, Amarjeet received Rs 3, 000 as prize money. Prizes were given away by chief guest, state vice president of BJP, Pawan Kumar Gupta. Prize money of Rs 9,000 for the main bout was contributed by Pawan Gupta.

The chief guest was accompanied by president J and K Indian Style Wrestling Association, Shiv Kumar Sharma, who presided. Industrialist, Darshan Mehra and Raj Kumar Bucha were guests of honour.

In the second main, Puran Singh of Punjab emerged winner beating Kamaljeet (Billa) of Khanna in Punjab. Winner got Rs 3, 000 while runners-up, Kamaljeet bagged Rs 2,000.

The third main bout played between Sainf Ali of Maller Kolta and Bholla of Amritsar ended in a draw after 23 minutes long fight. Both the wrestlers were given away

Rs 1, 500 each.

Gupral of Amritsar won the fourth main bout defeating Babber of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh in the fourth bout.

Dangal was organised by Baba Londna Dev Dangal Committee in association with J and K Indian Style Wrestling Association.

Wrestler Sushil Kumar: Counter-Attack Will Be Gameplan

After boxing, India’s medal hopes at the 2010 Commonwealth Games lie in wrestling. With less than 100 days to go for the 19th edition of the Games in New Delhi, scheduled for October 3-14, the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist Sushil Kumar already has his line of attack planned. 27-year-old Sushil in an exclusive chat with espnstar.com spoke on his tactics, “Counter-attack will be our strategy at the Commonwealth Games. That’s a very good strategy and our coaches are making sure we focus on counter-attack. Also, if my counter-attack is quicker then I’ll be at a greater advantage than my opponent.”

The Delhi grappler commended the efforts of the game’s governing body in installing mat facilities at training centers, adding the replacement of grass with mats is already reflecting on the wrestlers’ improved performance. “Even the small centers ensure training on mats these days, which has aided our performance. SAI as well as the Wrestling Federation of India have installed mats at the centers. This has been a great help to all the juniors, who have already started reaping the benefits.”

India brought home 49 medals from the 2006 Commonwealth Games at Melbourne. However as hosts Indian athletes will be under pressure to build on that tally.

Despite, the fourth finish in Melbourne Games, India were way behind the Top 3 - Australia (221), England (110) and Canada (86).

Sushil promises to give his best shot to swell the medal count in this edition. “Right now, my main focus is on the Commonwealth Games. As a host nation, I will give my 100 per cent to ensure a medal. Yes, there will be lot more pressure at home, but that comes with the support. So I am really looking forward to the challenge. After that, my focus will shift to the Asian Games in November.”

Unlike some of the boxers, Sushil Kumar has no complaints over the facilities for their Commonwealth Games preparations, and is looking to make the most of the training stint in Europe as well.

The wrestling team will soon head to Belarus for a month-long extensive training in Belarus.
