Rodrigues gave away prizes at Rural Wrestling Competition

CHANDIGARH: The 106th Annual Rural Wrestling Competition was organized at Dr Bheem Rao Ambedkar Stadium at village Khuda Ali Sher on Friday. The Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, General (Retd.) Dr. S. F. Rodrigues, inaugurated the wrestling competition and interacted with wrestlers Parminder Dhumchadi and Gurdev Malikpur.

On the occasion the Governor announced that work for extending the stadium will be taken up soon. To promote rural sports and to provide attractive incentive to the youth against drug abuse General Rodrigues announced that a wrestling competition and a kabbadi tournament will be organized in the stadium by the Chandigarh Administration next year. He laid stress on the fact that every effort should be made to win the youth away from any sort of intoxication and what better way to do it than interest them to take up sports.

Sarpanch Bhupinder Kaur presented the Governor with a memorandum of demands by the villagers. The Governor said that these demands shall be gradually adressed and amenities will be provided to villages to bring them at par with the urban centres.

The Governor also announced cash rewards for winners in different categories. He appreciated the effort undertaken by the gram panchayat in organising this tournament and encouraged them to organise more such participative events. The Governor gave away medals to the participating wrestlers on this occasion.

The senior officers who were present during this function included Ram Niwas, Home Secretary, Sanjay Kumar, Finance Secretary, Mohanjeet Singh, Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat, Sandeep Kumar, Director, Rural Development and Panchayat and Prerna Puri, Joint Director, Rural Development and Panchayat.
