The 8th Jaunapur Village Dangal

By Deepak Ansuia Prasad

Harpal Pahalwan is keeping the memory of his late son, Kapil Pahalwan, alive by organizing a great dangal in his honor each year.

This was the 8th dangal held in the village of Jaunapur. Harpal Pahalwan comes from an ordinary family, but with the support of his village he has managed to put together a great tribute to his son.

Kapil Pahalwan was a disciple of Guru Shyam Lal, a renowned wrestler and guru of the area. He is no more, but his wrestling legacy continues at his akhara, near aya nagar and Guru Shyam Lal akhara, which is run by Harpal Pahalwan at village nathupur.

The dangal featured lots of junior wrestlers and there was a prize for each athlete – winners and losers.

MLA Ch. Brahm Singh Tanwar presided as chief guest and he was felicitated with a pagari (head dress) as is the tradition. He also inaugurated a bout in the competition.

All the junior wrestler did a great job and demonstrated their formidable talents in the art of wrestling. Wrestlers came from lots of different akharas, including Guru Hanuman, Capt. Chandroop, Guru Jasram, Guru Raju Rana, Guru Shyam Lal, Guru Badri, Guru Virender, etc.

Ajit Pahalwan served as the announcer, while Rajinder Pahalwan, Harpal Pahalwan and others took care of the other arrangements.

The last bout was between Jeetu Pahalwan and Monu from Fatehpur. Monu is a very good wrestler and Jeetu is already a wrestling star. Jeetu had injured his leg in a recent match, but that didn’t stop him from wrestling today. He taped up his knee and managed to defeat the wrestler from Fatehpur.
