RITHOL VILLAGE DANGAL

By Deepak Ansuia Prasad

ENGLISH VERSION

Rithol is a village in Uttar Pradesh with a long history dating back to the time of Pandavas from the Hindu epic Mahabharta. Over the years, Rathod Rajputs settled nearby and their civilization flourished, expanding into dozens of other villages, like Behda, Sarfabad, etc.

The Sooti Brahmins constructed a temple there for Shiva, the god of death and destruction. Every year during Shiva Chaturthi or Mahashivratri, the birthday of Shiva, the villagers would hold a great festival where people come to pray, shop in the market, and enjoy themselves.

After the Mughals introduced Islam to India, Rithol became more diverse, with Hindus and Muslims living side by side. During the time of the Emperor Akbar the Great, a Sufi saint named Makhdoom Chisti preached love, tolerance, and brotherhood to the people of Rithol and nearby villages. His madrassa and dargah can still be seen in the village. After his death, the people of the area would recite his teachings in the form of Mushayara and Qavvali and they also started a tradition of holding a feast to honor Makhdoom Chisti.

Today, Hindus and Muslims still live together in Rithol Village and they each continue their festivals, one right after the other. Both celebrations attract lots of people from every walk of life. There’s music, dancing, and carnival rides for kids as well as shops selling all kinds of food and sweets.

But the main attraction is a big wrestling competition held over several days. The first dangal is organized by the Hindu community at the Shiva temple. Lots of Muslims also come to help organize. The good will is reciprocated when the Muslims hold their dangal at the shrine of Saint Makhdoom Chisti. It’s a beautiful example of how people from different religions can live together in peace and harmony and it’s a joy to witness.

The chief guests at the dangal included Leelu Pahalwan, MLA Prashant Chowdhary, Mehrajuddin, and the MLA and minister Ashok Chowdhary.

Leelu Pahalwan is something of a legend in Indian wrestling. He is the Pramukh, or head of the village of Dagarpur, nearby Rithol. He was a great wrestler in his day, learning the art of Indian wrestling at the akhara of Guru Rajkumar Goswami of Gokulpuri.
Throughout his life he has been an ardent supporter of wrestling.
Most people come to dangals and sit and watch the competitions. But Leelu Pahalwan is pitches in and helps out wherever there is need. He gave 5000/- to the Shiva temple committee for the welfare of the temple. Then he helped the organizers running the dangal. Leelu Pahalwan knows how to pair wrestlers, and how to make a boisterous crowd settle down. When the dangal committee was hesitating to allow more than the planned number of bouts, he offered to contribute to the prize money so every wrestler could get a match.

“Leelu Pahalwan is simply unstoppable when he sees wrestlers in need,” says Guru Rajkumar Goswami. He comes away from competitions without much money in his pocket, but the respect and admiration he gets from wrestlers, gurus and spectators has much greater value.

Seeing Leelu Pahalwan’s dedication and generosity, as Hindus and Muslims come together, shows how the ancient tradition of Indian wrestling can really bring out the best in people.
