AN INTRODUCTION TO KUSHTI CULTURE
By Deepak Ansuia Prasad
Promoting kushti worldwide is one of my aims. And when people from within or outside my country come to me to learn about the sport, it gives me the opportunity to achieve this goal.
In the past I have introduced many foreigners to the world of Indian wrestling, including an American defence official, two prestigious French photographers, an Australian MMA fighter, a World TV crew and many others.
Most recently, diplomats from Costa Rica came to watch kushti. I welcomed them, and found them to be very nice and respectful. We had a long talk about kushti culture in India.
Along with them, software engineers from Delhi, my friends Devesh and Kamal also visited. All shared their concern and good wishes for the kushti fraternity.
As a gesture of respect the diplomats and my friends offered gifts of wrestling trunks for all the wrestlers of the akhada.
I thanked them for their visit and requested them to come again.

ON THE KUSHTI TRAIL IN PUNJAB: A VISIT TO KAINOR AKHADA
By Deepak Ansuia Prasad

Akhada Kainor
It was a hot sunny day when we reached the akhada at Kainor. Sharma ji the guru at the akhada welcomed us and told us that it was not practice time and most of their pupils were away at competitions. However, there were still a few wrestlers there and the guru, Bhardwaj ji. We had a chat about kushti, his akhda etc. and had a look around the facilities, which included a sand pit for traditional wrestling as well as a mat for freestyle wrestling and a hostel for wrestlers.
The End of the Road
The car broke down on the way to Patiala, so it would have been very late in the day when we reached Subhash Malik ji’s wrestling academy there. Also, my French friend needed to catch a flight. So I called Golu Pahlwan and told him that I would start my next tour from Patiala and we headed back to Delhi.
The journey to the akhadas of Punjab was a great experience. I had a help from Golu Pahlwan, all the gurus, coaches and wrestlers. I thank all of them once again. You are all heroes of Indian wrestling!
